Frequently asked questions
What people most want to know about VegeBuddy.
What is VegeBuddy?
VegeBuddy is a free mobile app for vegetarians in Malaysia. It helps you find nearby vegetarian restaurants, scan food / menus / ingredient labels to analyse vegetarian compatibility, translate dietary needs while travelling, share food experiences with the community, and organise group meals (Jio meals) with vegetarian friends. Available on iOS and Android.
Is VegeBuddy free?
Yes. VegeBuddy is completely free to download and use on the App Store (Malaysia and Singapore) and Google Play.
What kinds of vegetarian diets does VegeBuddy support?
VegeBuddy supports Buddhist 素食 (which excludes the five pungent vegetables — garlic, onion, leek, chive, scallion), lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian, and vegan diets. You can filter restaurants and products by your specific diet style.
Does VegeBuddy work outside Malaysia?
Yes — travel-mode features (menu scan and dietary-needs translation) work in any country. The restaurant database is densest in Malaysia, with Singapore coverage growing.
What can the VegeBuddy scan feature do?
VegeBuddy's scan feature supports three uses: (1) scan a food dish to analyse whether it's vegetarian-friendly, (2) scan a restaurant menu to identify vegetarian-safe options, and (3) scan an ingredient label on food packaging to flag non-vegetarian ingredients like gelatin, fish sauce, or animal-derived emulsifiers. Works in Malaysia and overseas while travelling.
What is a Jio meal?
"Jio" is Malaysian/Singaporean slang for "invite". A Jio meal is a group meal you organise and invite friends to. In VegeBuddy you pick a vegetarian restaurant, invite friends, see who's coming, and split the bill afterwards — all in one place.
How is VegeBuddy different from Google Maps or HappyCow?
Google Maps lists vegetarian restaurants but doesn't filter by Buddhist 素食 vs vegan vs lacto, doesn't analyse food / menus / ingredient labels for vegetarian compatibility, and doesn't translate dietary needs while travelling. HappyCow is global and English-only with limited Malaysian coverage. VegeBuddy is purpose-built for Malaysia, bilingual (Chinese / English), supports nuanced vegetarian diet styles, and adds food / menu / ingredient-label scanning, dietary-needs translation, and community Jio-meal features that the others don't.
