What is VegeBuddy?
A free app for vegetarians in Malaysia. Find veg restaurants nearby, scan dishes, menus and ingredient labels to check whether they suit your diet, translate your needs while travelling, share finds with the community, and organise Jio meals with friends. iOS and Android.
How do I find vegetarian or vegan food near me in Malaysia?
Open VegeBuddy's restaurant finder and allow location access to see nearby vegetarian, vegan and vegetarian-friendly places. Switch between fully vegetarian restaurants and places with vegetarian options, then filter by rating, distance and whether they're open now.
Is it free?
Yes — free to download and use on the App Store (Malaysia and Singapore) and Google Play.
Which vegetarian diets are supported?
Buddhist 素食 (which excludes the five pungent vegetables — garlic, onion, leek, chive, scallion), lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian and vegan. Set your diet in the app and the scanner checks dishes, menus and ingredient labels against it.
Does it work outside Malaysia?
Yes. Menu scanning and dietary-needs translation work in any country. The restaurant database is densest in Malaysia, with Singapore coverage growing.
What can the scanner read?
Three things: a plated dish, a restaurant menu, and an ingredient label on packaging. On labels it flags non-vegetarian ingredients such as gelatin, fish sauce and animal-derived emulsifiers.
Can I order vegetarian food or shop for vegetarian groceries in VegeBuddy?
VegeBuddy Food delivery and the Mart vegetarian shop are being prepared for Malaysia and are not yet open to the public. Restaurant discovery, three scan modes, travel translation, community and Jio meals are available now.
What is a Jio meal?
“Jio” is Malaysian and Singaporean slang for “invite”. A Jio meal is a group meal you organise: pick a vegetarian restaurant, invite friends, see who is coming, and split the bill afterwards — all in one place.
How is this different from Google Maps or HappyCow?
Google Maps is useful for finding places, but it does not separate Buddhist vegetarian, vegan and lacto diets or analyse a dish, menu or ingredient label. HappyCow has broader global listings and more user reviews. VegeBuddy focuses on Malaysia and combines diet-aware scanning, vegetarian restaurant discovery, travel translation and Jio meals in one app.
